How Our 4-in-1 Conversion Works

A 4-in-1 convertible crib is designed to do more than hold a newborn. With the right frame and the model-matched conversion kits, the same piece of furniture can move with your child through several stages—saving you the cost and clutter of buying a new bed every few years.

At Heirloom Cribs and More, our 4-in-1 models are built from solid hardwood specifically so the conversion path is worth taking. Here is how it works, stage by stage.

What “4-in-1” means

“4-in-1” refers to four configurations a single convertible crib can support over time. The exact sequence on our models is:

Not every model supports every stage the same way, and not every model ships with every kit in the box. The product page for each crib states exactly which stages it supports and whether the conversion kits are included or listed separately. Why the frame matters for a long conversion path

A crib that is meant to become a full-size bed needs a structure that can handle years of use and reconfiguration. That is why our convertible cribs are built from solid hardwood rather than particle board or MDF. The same posts and rails that form the crib become the headboard and footboard of the larger bed, so the underlying structure has to stay rigid through disassembly, reassembly, and a growing child’s use.

Solid hardwood also means the piece can be passed down—the “heirloom” part of our name. A true convertible that lasts is only a good investment if the frame itself lasts.

How the crib stage works

In its first configuration, the crib is a standard full-size crib with a mattress support designed for a firm, tight-fitting crib mattress, following current safe-sleep guidance and our safety standards (ASTM F1169, CPSC requirements, and JPMA where applicable). This is the stage you use from birth through the early toddler years.

Step 1: Convert to the toddler bed

When your child is ready to leave the crib—typically between roughly 18 months and 3 years, depending on the child and your pediatric guidance—the front rail is removed or replaced using the model-matched toddler conversion kit. The result is a low toddler bed that a child can get in and out of safely while the frame remains familiar.

What changes: Front crib rail comes off / is swapped for the toddler rail. Mattress support stays low. Bed still uses a crib or toddler mattress per the product specs.

Step 2: Convert to the daybed

In the daybed configuration, the front rail is removed entirely and the back panel and side rails remain in place. The result is a three-sided bed that works well for naps, reading time, or a slightly older child’s room.

What changes: Front rail is removed. Back and side panels remain. No floor rail required in this stage.

Step 3: Convert to a full-size bed

For the full-size bed stage, the crib sides and front rail are replaced by the model-matched full conversion kit, which typically adds a new headboard/footboard extension or hardware so the original head and foot boards frame a full-size mattress. This is the final stage and is designed to carry a child (or even a teenager) through the full-size years.

Do you need a different mattress at each stage?

Generally, the crib stage uses a firm, tight-fitting crib mattress. Later stages may use different mattress sizes—for example, a toddler or full-size mattress depending on the configuration and kit. Are the conversion kits included?

It depends on the style. Some of our configurations (for example certain Princeton-style options) include the conversion kits with the crib; others list the kits separately as purchasable options. Do I need to buy a new crib as my child grows?

That is the point of a 4-in-1: with the right kits, you do not. One solid hardwood crib can serve a child (or multiple children) through crib, toddler, daybed, and full-size stages. The kits are model-matched, meaning they are engineered for the specific Heirloom frame—using only the kit intended for your model preserves both safety and structural integrity.

Our cribs are custom, made-to-order pieces. The ordering path is:

Place a 50% deposit—production begins immediately.
We confirm your estimated lead time and delivery cost for your zip code.
Balance is due before shipping; inspect on delivery.
